Tom Pheby had so much material left over from researching his original 10 things you might not know about Leonard Nimoy that he thought he'd compile another list for this week's Star Trek column. And here it is...
1. Leonard Nimoy improvised many elements of Spock's characteristics during production of Star Trek. This includes
the "Vulcan neck pinch" which he suggested whilst filming "The Enemy
Within". He also created the famous "Vulcan salute", during the
production of "Amok Time", using a version of a traditional Jewish
religious hand gesture.
2. Spock's remark "Live long and prosper" was ranked number 5 in TV Guide's list of "TV's 20 Top Catchphrases" in 2005.
3. Nimoy and William Shatner were the only actors to appear in every broadcast episode of the original Star Trek. However, Nimoy tops Shatner as he is the only cast member who was also in the unbroadcast pilot, The Cage.
4. Nimoy's association with William Shatner goes far beyond that of Star Trek. They were born just four days apart from one another, both of them suffer from Tinnitus (Nimoy's right ear and Shatner's left ear are affected. Their hearing was apparently damaged during the filming of the episode Arena, when they were both close to a special effects explosion) and
outside of Star Trek:TOS and Star
Trek: The Animated Series they have worked together on 4 other TV shows; The Man From U.N.C.L.E., Mission: Impossible,
T.J. Hooker and Futurama. Nimoy was even best man at Shatner's third
wedding to Nerine Kidd.
5. Leonard Nimoy shared a story of an encounter that happened a few years after Star Trek: TOS was cancelled, "Many Years ago at a Hollywood party, someone whispered in my ear, 'I
recognize you, you had your ears fixed'. It was John Wayne."
6. Nimoy's Father was working as a barber when the series first became
successful in the 60's. He revealed that children used to come in and ask
for a "Spock Cut", leaving without knowing that their hair had
been cut by 'Mr Spock's Dad'.
7. Nimoy provided the voice of Galvatron in the 1986 film "Transformers: The Movie". A voice actor called Frank Welker played Galvatron's in "The Transformers" TV show, co-incidentally Welker's previous credits included providing the voice for 'young Spock' in "Star Trek III: The Search For Spock".
8. In 1984 Nimoy directed and appeared in the video for the Bangles release "Going Down To Liverpool"...
9. His son Adam Nimoy had a successful career as an Entertainment Attorney before embarking on a career as a director. His credits include
Star Trek: Next Generation.
10. We've experienced Nimoy's wonderful singing already, but we can't finish without this gem. In 1967 Dot Records released Mr Spock's Music From Outer Space, this was re-released in the mid 90s featuring several bonus tracks including "Spock Thoughts". Here Nimoy recites Spock's philosophy on life, including such pearls of wisdom as "Listen to others, even the dull and ignorant!"...
