So we all know that Star Wars: Episode VII is currently filming with JJ Abrams behind the camera, and we will get to see the results in December 2015. We also know that Disney have plans for a some Star Wars spin-off stand-alone movies that will be released between the new trilogy installments (and possibly after), but what are they about? And who is directing them?
Well we can now answer one of those questions for sure. StarWars.com has just revealed that Godzilla director Gareth Edwards will be the man responsible for the first ever Star Wars stand-alone movie. It comes from a screenplay by Gareth Whitta and is due for release one year after Episode VII, on December 16th 2016.
"Ever since I saw Star Wars I knew exactly what I wanted to do for the rest of my life -- join the Rebel Alliance! I could not be more excited and honored to go on this mission with Lucasfilm," said Edwards.
Whitta states, "From the moment I first saw the original movie as a wide-eyed kid, Star Wars has been the single most profound inspiration to my imagination and to my career as a writer. It is deeply special to me,so to be given the opportunity to contribute to its ongoing legacy, especially in collaboration with a film-maker as talented as Gareth, is literally a dream come true. I'm still pinching myself."If you believe the recent rumours the movie will focus on Boba Fett, with two more stan-alones to follow, Han Solo and Red Five. They are unconfirmed and may possibly remain so for a long time, after all it's only been a couple of weeks since they 'officially' announced the cast for Episode VII, if the same secrecy surrounds this production we might not know a title until Spring 2015 - I'm hoping that's not the case and some more details arrive soon.
If they do, we will bring them to you.
What do you think of the choice of Gareth Edwards to make the first Star Wars stand-alone movie?
