DOCTOR WHO - Blood Of The Cybermen

Christopher Morley checks out the story behind the Doctor Who Adventure Game, Blood of the Cybermen.

Our next gaming session brings us to Blood Of The Cybermen! And there's a cameo from Sarah Douglas- Ursa in Superman 2- as Elizabeth Meadows, leader of the GSO's project in the Arctic Circle. Her crew are being attacked by Cybermats & converted into Cyberslaves....which basically means standard Cybermen with more human-shaped bodies, able to fire lightning from their hands just as the Silence could, sort of.

The Chief Engineer, Chisholm- played by Barnaby Edwards, more often to be found inside a Dalek- is the first to succumb, just after meeting the Doctor & Amy & offering them a lift back to the GSO base. Luckily Meadows is working on a cure in an attempt to get her team back, though she needs a sample of the virus the Cybermats are carrying. A job only the man in the tweed jacket & his Scottish redhead companion can pull off. That done, they soon find Meadows has gone missing- though the Doctor is able to administer a sample of the cure to Chisholm, who's already been partially converted.

Making an elementary mistake, its time to go down a lift & investigate a mystery. Massive own goal there! Meadows has been a Cyberslave all along, & forces the Doctor to revive a frozen Cyber-army, including a Cyber-Lord, in exchange for Amy's freedom. Seeing no way out, he complies- & as reward for her thawing him out the Cyber-Lord orders all Cyberslaves to be destroyed, deeming them impure compared to ' true ' Cybermen. But help is at hand- Chisholm's recovered & he's got a laser! Always a handy tool when you're in a tight squeeze. From then on it should be plain sailing- with a hint that UNIT might be called in to aid in any clean-up operation.

Like any television episode of Doctor Who, The Adventure Games were fully scripted. Here are a few script extracts-

EXT. SURVEY OUTPOST  DAY
The Geological Survey Outpost. Cold. Sinister. Inhospitable. Apparently deserted.
A board names it: ARCTIC GEOLOGICAL SURVEY BASE, ZEBRA BAY.
The TARDIS materializes within the quadrant of pre‐fabricated buildings, snowcats, and a watchtower.
THE DOCTOR and AMY step out of the TARDIS.

AMY
"Doctor, did you ever see The Thing?"

THE DOCTOR
"The Carpenter Kurt Russell Thing or the Howard Hawks Thing-y with the walking carrot?"

THE DOCTOR
"Not sure I see your point, anyway.

CONTINUING PREVIOUS CUTSCENE
EXT. SURVEY OUTPOST , DAY
As CHISHOLM stumbles out of the TARDIS...

CHISHOLM
"You brought me back! They'll get us all!"

The Doctor tries to calm him...

THE DOCTOR
"I give you my word. I'll protect you - whatever you’re talking about, I can help. I promise."

CHISHOLM
"How? They got everybody -

THE DOCTOR
"What got them?"

AMY
"And changed them into what?"

CHISHOLM
"Like robots – slaves- Cyberslaves......

INT. CONTROL ROOM/CONVERSION CHAMBER, DAY
THE DOCTOR enters the control room. PROFESSOR MEADOWS is there. Half in shadow. We see only one side of her face.

THE DOCTOR
"Professor Meadows! I was afraid the Cybermats had got you."

She turns to face him and he sees that she is metal.

THE DOCTOR
"Ah! I see..."

And two more CYBERSLAVES emerge from the darkness, flanking her.

MEADOWS
"I don't think so, Doctor."

THE DOCTOR
"You must spend hours in front of the mirror in a morning."

Meadows takes a menacing step towards him ‐

MEADOWS
"Humour is a redundant application of intellect."

THE DOCTOR
"I don't know, I find it comes in handy in a tight spot. So you were a Cyberslave from the start?"

MEADOWS
"And you answered the distress call I directed at your TARDIS."

THE DOCTOR
"What do you want with me? And what have you done with Amy?"

Meadows turns on a monitor-it shows AMY, struggling, but strapped to the table in a conversion chamber.

Just goes to show the video-game world takes just as much, if not more, work compared to television!
