Hobbies Popular Among Movie Stars

Gaming is a popular hobby among movie stars.

Although it may seem that movie stars are living in a different world, they are, in fact, not much different from anyone else. They work, they eat, they sleep, and they have hobbies just like the rest of us.

And while they have more money to spend than the average person, Hollywood actors often share the same interests as mere mortals. Here are some of the most popular hobbies among movie stars.

Yoga

Yoga has become incredibly popular in the last few years as people have understood the physical and emotional benefits it can offer. The list of Hollywood celebrities that regularly practice yoga includes former “Friends” star Jennifer Aniston, and “Legally Blonde” lead Reese Witherspoon.

Many people wrongly stereotype yoga as being a hobby mostly undertaken by women, but that couldn’t be further from the truth, and Hollywood proves that.

Colin Farrell, Robert Downey Jr, Orlando Bloom, Jeremy Piven, Ryan Gosling, Justin Timberlake, Russell Brand, and Matthew McConaughey are all regularly spotted stretching in various yoga positions.

Poker

Poker is a game enjoyed by people from all walks of life. It’s accessible, it can be played with just a deck of cards, a smartphone, or a computer, and most importantly, it often involves high stakes. It’s never been easier to start playing either, with celebrities and regular civilians alike starting out by playing online poker games before moving to live games and prestigious tournaments.

Playing poker is a great way to socialize, which is why many people host regular poker nights with their buddies. It’s also a great way to de-stress since playing it requires you to clear your mind of distractions so you can focus on your hand and reading other players.

Countless Hollywood celebrities regularly play poker, with many even taking part in tournaments. For example, former Spiderman actor Tobey Maguire has been playing since 2004 while Shannon Elizabeth played in quite a few tournaments during the 2000s.

Matt Damon is known to play poker regularly, making him a great fit for the possible second installation of the movie “Rounders”. He, Ben Affleck, and many others used to regularly play in private games organized in Hollywood.

Cars

There is something gripping about cars. For some people, it’s the roaring of a V8 engine, while for others it’s the beautiful curves of the bodywork. Many also enjoy the rush of driving fast.

And when you made several million dollars from your last movie, it’s easy to get carried away turning your wish list of cars into your actual list of cars.

The British actor Jude Law, who is famous for his work in Sherlock Holmes, Spy, and The Talented Mr Ripley, has a large collection of cars. This includes an $85,000 Audi A8, a Mercedes CLK Cabrio that he often drives in around LA, and a Mercedes SL550 for when he wants something a little different.

However, he has a real penchant for classic cars, which is why he owns a Mercedes SL380 from the 1980s. It’s not going to set any records, as its flat-8 engine originally had 218 bhp under the hood, but this is likely reduced because engines degrade over time.

Other movie stars that love cars include Rowan Atkinson, Patrick Dempsey, Nicolas Cage, and Mischa Barton.

Collecting

Tom Hanks enjoys collecting vintage typewriters

Collecting things is a popular hobby, though the objects that people collect can vary widely. Popular options include stamps, model cars, coins, vinyls, comic books, and trading cards.

Movie stars are no exception here. Tom Hanks is known to be an avid collector of vintage typewriters. He reportedly has around 250 different machines, most of which are still in full working order. His love of these classic writing machines goes so far that he wrote a collection of stories, each one including a different typewriter.

Other collecting movie stars include Patrick Dempsey, who has been an avid stamp collector for most of his life; Jack Black, who collects coins; and Nicolas Cage, who collects comic books.

Video Gaming

Video gaming has become an incredibly popular hobby in the last couple of decades. It’s gone from being the domain of men under 30 to being an inclusive hobby that everyone can enjoy.

That’s partly thanks to the widespread adoption of smartphones that have made it possible for people to play anywhere and casual games that have a much broader appeal.

In the US alone, around 164 million adults play video games. That’s equivalent to half of the country’s population, so it shouldn’t come as a surprise that many movie stars also like to play.

The list of gaming movie stars includes High School Music star, Zac Efron, who loves games so much he hosted the 2007 launch of Halo 3 for Xbox 360. In a similar vein, Will Arnett managed to get himself a role in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, thanks to his love for the game (and his fame and acting skills, of course).

Arnett is such a passionate gamer that he hosted a show called GameChat where he and his friends play games and talk about it at the same time.

Some big names you might not expect also play video games too, including Samuel L. Jackson, who has been playing games since Pong was released. He’s even said that he believes video games could become the “future of all entertainment”. Jackson has even starred in Grand Theft Auto San Andreas, where he played Officer Frank Tenpenny, a corrupt cop in the fictional city of Los Santos.

Megan Fox is another avid gamer, with her favorite titles including Halo and Mortal Kombat. Halo is also a favorite of Michelle Rodriguez, who said she took inspiration from it when playing a soldier in the film Battle Los Angeles.
