Superhero Bodies: What’s Behind the Marvel Diet

Staying in tip-top shape is important when prioritizing health. In fact, more than three-quarters of US adults consider being in shape and looking good very important. Although it’s easier said than done, the road to a healthy body can start with seeking inspiration. And for avid comic book and movie fans, what better inspiration could you have for getting fit than the Marvel superheroes that you see on screen?

Actors in the Marvel Cinematic Universe are known for their intense dedication to preparing for their roles, including conditioning their bodies. Take Captain Marvel Brie Larson herself, who underwent brutal workouts like weight training with chains before suiting up. After all, being a protector of the universe is no walk in the park!

So, if you’re wondering how your beloved Marvel actors achieved their superhero bodies, search no further. Below, we take a look at what’s behind the Marvel diet.

A look into Marvel superhero preparations

Paul Rudd, who played the small-but-terrible Marvel superhero Ant-Man, followed a very restrictive diet to get in shape for his role. In fact, he described it as “horrible” in one interview, with his only reward for training being simple sparkling water. Alongside his intense workout regimen, the actor also cut down on carbohydrates, alcohol, and fried food, which, in his words, meant “eliminating anything fun for a year” to play a superhero character. But he also noted that following a strict diet wasn’t so bad when he got used to it, especially since it boosted his energy in the morning.

As mentioned, the Captain Marvel actress also did a lot of strength training, working out five times a day for nine months. Larson’s superhero workouts include push-ups with chains, barbell hip thrusts, and deadlifts. Meanwhile, Chris Hemsworth—who played the God of Thunder—prepared for the Thor:Love and Thunder installment by training for 12 months. His strength routine included double squats, push-ups, reverse lunges, and deadlifts, and the right foods, like healthy protein, were incorporated into his diet.

Now that you know how some of the Earth’s mightiest heroes prepare their bodies, do you think you could achieve the same results? Here’s what you need to know:

Is it possible for regular people to get a Marvel body?

Although following the same restrictive routines can help you achieve a Marvel body, medical weight loss has also emerged as a weight reduction method, but it needs to be cleared by a doctor. Weight loss drugs, including GLP-1 meds like Wegovy and Ozempic, are common medications that help people with special health needs lose weight. Through GLP-1 weight loss programs, people with type 2 diabetes are guided to meet their nutritional needs and stay physically active through daily targets and activity goals. The program also provides a go-to food list for when your calorie counts needs to be reduced.

If you want to take a similar approach to weight loss and muscle gain as your favorite superhero actors, stick to a sustainable fitness routine that involves a proper diet and regular exercise. Studies have shown that a Mediterranean diet – which consists of antioxidant-rich foods like fruits, vegetables, fish, and whole grains – promotes greater health outcomes and physical fitness. You can start with cardio workouts like running and cycling, then move on to strength training. Just make sure to adjust the intensity of your workouts based on your capacity and consult a medical expert about the diet that can best help you sustain your weight loss efforts in the long run.

Achieving a Marvel body requires discipline and, in some cases, restrictions that may not be suitable for everybody. Instead, you can explore other weight loss techniques that suit you, such as medication programs, sustainable diets, and exercise, for a healthy weight loss and improved quality of life.
