We're in a bit of a state at the moment. We really really don't want Matt Smith to leave, there's something about him that has been more Doctor-ish than any Who have gone before (see what we did there!). But then every time we think about Peter Capaldi we really really can't wait for him to be the Doctor. We know he's going to be amazing.
Still, when his name was announced many people cried out "But he's been in Doctor Who before!".
Twice actually, first as Caecilius in The Fires Of Pompeii, then he played John Frobisher in the brilliant Torchwood : Children Of Earth.
"How could he be the Doctor?" came the cries. Well it's not unheard of for actors to have played more than one role in Doctor Who, there have been many. In the case of Peter Capaldi, apparently Steven Moffie-Monster has a secret plan! That plan was thought up by Russell 'Tickle-me' Davies in case he'd managed to cast Capaldi.
But until they let us in on the secret, and with the greatest respect to Mr Billy Joel (it's set loosely to the tune of We Didn't Start The Fire), we proudly present Doctor Who & The Capaldi Casting Dilemma...
Karen Gillan, Paul Darrow, Geoffrey Palmer, Graham Cole
Eve Myles, Peter Miles, Freema Agyeman
Puter Purvis, Prentis Hancock , Nicholas Courtney, Philip Madoc
Did I mention Madoc's got four roles in the can?
David Troughton was Peladon, then Doctor Who came back again
Professor Hobbs, on a bus, it brakes down mid-tour.
Michael Wisher, Milton Johns, Lynda Baron, Chipo Chung,
Lalla Ward, popped up twice, then married Doctor four.
Capaldi didn't start the fire, it was always burning whilst the Tardis was turning
Capaldi didn't start the fire, no, he didn't light it, but the Doctor will fight it.
Ian Marter, John Levene, as well as Benton, went unseen
Dressed up as a Cyberman to get his Equity card.
In Arc Of Infinity, Colin Baker was first seen
Gallifreyan Chancellor Guard, humourless and acting hard.
Commander Maxil, staser gun, for Doctor Five it was not fun.
Davidson, blown away, what else do I have to say?
Capaldi didn't start the fire, it was always burning whilst the Tardis was turning
Capaldi didn't start the fire, no, he didn't light it, but as Twelve he'll fight it.
Gantok, Lazarus, both were played by Mark Gatiss
Bernard Cribbins, one wasn't cannon, so it doesn't count!
Jacqueline Hill was Barbara, she's back again, as Lexa
Jean Marsh, Anna Reid, that's a huge amount.
General Finch and then he's Chang, it's John Bennett back again
Ellen Thomas, Jeremy Bulloch, he was Hal and Tor
Inferno and Weng-Chiang, they had Chris Benjamin.
Both before The Time Wars, and I can't think of any more!
Capaldi didn't start the fire, it was always burning whilst the Tardis was turning,
Capadi didn't start the fire, But when he's gone will it still burn on and on and on and on...
