Titan Comics: MONO #4 Review

Gail Williams comes to the end of The Old Curiosity Shop...

This is the last instalment in the story of the Old Curiosity Shop and it sees the final showdown between Mono, the human-ape Queens assassin, and his nose-less opponent, the Ghost of Christmas Future.

As the two men face one another it is a surprising equal battle. They each fight with strength and brutality. There’s a fair bit of too-ing and fro-ing between the men, but it’s more fisty-cuffs at dawn than witty banter. Have to say - very well drawn fisty-cuffs. The artwork reminded me of the section in the Robert Downey Jr version of Sherlock, were at the beginning of the film you see the slow motion movement and reverberation of faces and skin as punches are landed.

The drawing here is harsh lined and scrappy to match the storyline. But the ruthless nature of the fight is juxtaposed against the cool carved beauty of the artworks they fight between. All of which is a reflection of Mono’s inner conflict, man verses beast.

Interestingly, we see Mono come back from the brink to KO his opponent, but it’s a woman, not the Queen, who screams for The Ghost to be killed. International man of mystery that Mono is, he walks away with an enigmatic secret.

It is a secret that Mono keeps even from his journal, which is where we’ve always been and which returns the reader to another man’s office, in another city, in another time. With another of Mono’s journals on his desk. Another adventure just waiting to begin.

Published by Titan Comics, Mono #4 is on sale now.
