Today In DOCTOR WHO History: August 27th

It's a bumper day of Doctor Who stuff...

Click on any red text to read our full retrospectives/reviews for that episode. All viewing figures are for UK premiere broadcasts unless otherwise stated.

August 27th
Welcome to our daily round up of all things Doctor Who related that went down on this day in the show's long history. We start today's column, not on the television, but glued to our radios for the return of the Third Doctor, Sarah Jane Smith and the Brigadier, as on August 27th 1993 the first part of the radio adventure The Paradise Of Death was broadcast from 6:32pm on BBC Radio 5.

The first of only two audio adventures with Jon Pertwee as the Third Doctor, it was broadcast in 5 30 minute installments, and written by Pertwee-era producer Barry Letts.

Episodes Broadcast
And now across to the television for the return of Doctor Who Series 6. It resumed this day in 2011 with the episode Let's Kill Hitler, 8.1 million people tuned in for the Eleventh Doctor story.

Related Programming
If you turned over to BBC Three after watching Let's Kill Hitler, you would've caught the latest installment of Doctor Who Confidential titled River Runs Wild, in which you got to go backstage with Matt Smith and Karen Gillan in 1930s Berlin, and discover some behind-the-scenes secrets coming up in the remainder of series 6.

That's not all the Eleventh Doctor era Who you could watch on August 27th, although this came 12 months later...

Minisodes
We miss the Doctor Who minisodes, don't you? Sort it out Chibbers!

Pond Life acted as a prequel to Asylum of the Daleks, and the first chunk of the 5-part mini-adventure was available to view on the BBC's red button service from August 27th 2012, with the remaining 4 parts following daily. Above you can watch the whole thing.

I know, we spoil you.

But wait, there's more...

Special Events
If you were one of the lucky people to have got tickets to The Filmhouse in Edinburgh on August 27th 2015 then you were in the crowd for the premiere of The Magician's Apprentice, the opening episode of series 9 of Doctor Who. Not only did you get to see it several weeks before it's TV debut on September 19th but there was also a Q&A session afterwards with Steven Moffat and Peter Capaldi. You lucky, lucky people!

Join us again tomorrow for another round-up of the episodes broadcast, the spin-offs, the special events, the birthday's celebrated and anything else of note that went down on this day in Doctor Who history.
