I know. But it exists.
Welcome to our round-up of the Star Trek episodes which received their premiere broadcast on this day throughout the show's long history, along with anything else of note that may have taken place. All viewing figures quoted are for U.S. premiere broadcast (unless noted).
June 9th
Arriving in US theatres on June 9th 1989, Star Trek V: The Final Frontier follows the crew of the USS Enterprise-A as they confront the renegade Vulcan Sybok, who is searching for God at the center of the galaxy. The fifth installment in the film series was the first (and only) to be directed by William Shatner (following two films directed by Leonard Nimoy). Shatner also developed the initial storyline, in which Sybok searches for God but instead finds a devil; his primary inspiration was the phenomenon of televangelism and the high potential for fraud among its practitioners.
The Final Frontier had the highest opening gross of any Star Trek film at that point and was number one in its first week at the box office; however, its grosses quickly dropped in subsequent weeks and with a final take of $63 million (on a $33 million budget) it became the least profitable of all the Trek films to date. Reviewers weren't overly kind, so that clearly didn't help, but what did the damage was word of mouth from those who went to see it on the openign weekend. According to its producer, Harve Bennett, The Final Frontier "nearly killed the franchise".
From the big screen to the small screen...
Premiering on June 9th 1997, the Star Trek: Deep Space Nine episode In The Cards saw Jake Sisko look for a present to give to his father to cheer him up, and deciding upon a 1951 Willie Mays baseball card. He enlists Nog to help him obtain it, but they run into complications with a mysterious geneticist, Dr. Giger.
Marking the directorial debut of Michael Dorn (Commander Worf), In The Cards second plot thread would see Bajoran spiritual leader Kai Winn meet with Dominion representative Weyoun to discuss concerns over the prospect of a Federation/Dominion war and its effects on Bajor.
Join us again next time for another round-up of the episodes broadcast, the movie's released, the special events, the birthday's celebrated and anything else of note that went down on this day in Star Trek history.
