Even if you're buying the gift for a young person who hates to read, you can encourage reading through the enjoyment of their favorite franchise. Several days a week you could try D.E.A.R. time (drop everything and read). Show through example that reading is fun and it is not something boring that somebody else tells you to do.
Pick out a book series, like the James Bond 007 books, and start reading one of them. Then when you are sitting down at dinner (at a relaxed meal where everybody is not rushed), you start to talk about the book you are reading. What did you like about it? What did you not like about it? Do you recommend it? Do you not recommend it? If your kids are old enough, you might find them picking up the books and reading them themself. If they are younger, they may just enjoy hearing you retell the story in an age appropriate manner.
Even if you are an adult, you may decide to read the Young James Bond Series. Even Star Wars and Star Trek have Young Adult versions that are targeting upper elementary, middle school age kids (reading level). Don’t discount these books just because they are promoted “for kids”. The Star Wars Legends Books are very well written.
It is a very rewarding experience to go through a book series as a family. It does not matter what the series is: Star Wars, Star Trek, James Bond, Harry Potter, 39 Clues, Magic School Bus, Doctor who the list goes on. The point is to share the joy of reading as a family.
