We've known for some time that Tim Burton was in talks to make a sequel to Beetlejuice, based on a script by Seth Grahame Smith, but there had been no word from the man himself, Sir Michael of Keaton, if he was prepared to return to the role.
As much as I love the character, without Keaton this film just wouldn't fly in my book. A recasting would be a travesty, especially since the make-up involved for Betelgeuse would hide any aging on Ketaon's part.
But in an interview with MTV, Michael Keaton has confirmed that he's up for a return and has had discussions with Tim Burton about it. It's still early days but Keaton says...
"I've e-mailed Tim a couple of times, talked to the writer a couple of times, but all really, really preliminary stuff, I always said that's the one thing I'd like to do again, if I ever did anything again. But it kind of required Tim to be involved some way or another. Now it looks like he is involved, and without giving too much away we've talked to each other, and e-mailed each other, and if he's in, it's going to be hard not to be in."Keaton's work schedule is pretty clear (according to IMDB) and Burton's finishing up post-production on Big Eyes, with nothing else scheduled past 2014. So we could realistically see the pair back as star and director in Beetlejuice 2, with a potential late 2015/2016 release date.
I don't know about you but I'd be super excited to see them re-team on this. I think the original is still my favourite Tim Burton film, and although it wasn't to everyone's liking I enjoyed his recent Dark Shadows movie a lot. Keaton's been on fire recently, and the forthcoming Birdman looks really interesting, but I'd love to see him back as the Ghost With The Most. Maybe they can film two films back to back because surely the third in the trilogy needs to be titled Beetlejuice Beetlejuice Beetlejuice!!!
