Which Witch Is The Best Witch?

It's a question that has likely kept you up at night pondering the answer - when it comes to witches, which witch is the best witch? Well now, thanks to our patented unique witch sorting solution (the formula for which remains a closely guarded secret) we can finally reveal the answer...

As the saying goes, with great power comes great responsibility, so you won't find any bad witches here, oh no! It's just the good witches and the occasionally mischievous witches who make up our top 10.

So without further ado, I'm sure you can't wait to discover which witch is in which position...

10. The Halliwell Sisters (Charmed)
Our witch sorting solution puts the sisters from Charmed in tenth place. Piper, Phoebe and Paige (and before that Piper, Phoebe and Prue) used the power of three to set themselves free. Meaning they were actually marked down slightly as it took three of them to do the job properly!

9. Hazel the McWitch (Rentaghost)
This Scottish witch falls into the mischievous category, but mainly uses her witching powers for comical effect. A surprise entry into the top 10, but she received extra points for also being a ghost.

8. Madam Professor Minerva McGonagall (Harry Potter)
Head of Gryffindor House and a member of the First and Second Order of the Phoenix. Professor McGonagall has fought for good in several battles, including the Battle of the Astronomy Tower and the Battle of Hogwarts, where she led the resistance against Lord Voldemort.

She also received bonus points for her 'magical' work on Downton Abbey.

7. Granny Weatherwax (Discworld)
Esmerelda "Esme" Weatherwax was intended by nature to be a "wicked witch" but, at an early age, realised she had to be "the good one" to balance her sister, Lily. She is the self-appointed guardian of the village of Bad Ass and the Kingdom of Lancre as a whole, and frequently defends it against supernatural powers.

6. Glinda The Good Witch (The Wizard of Oz)
Glinda is a good witch, it says so in her name. She is the most powerful sorceress of Oz, ruler of the Quadling Country south of the Emerald City, and protector of Princess Ozma. She is also in sixth position on this list, something which, we're told, she's very proud of.

5. Meg (Meg and Mog)
Although Meg's spells often go wrong, she means well. Since the early 1970s Meg, and her cat Mog, have provided many happy hours of colourful witchy literary adventures for children everywhere, and stood a good chance of taking the top spot in our witch sorting session until it came to light that in the 2003 US animated version her voice was dubbed by Avril Lavigne.

And it was terrible.

4. Sabrina (Sabrina The Teenage Witch)
Discovering her magical powers on her sixteenth birthday, Sabrina's spells often go awry, however her Aunt's were on hand to guide her in her witching ways. Sabrina gains youthful points bonus, rewarded for her forthcoming years of witching potential and inevitable reboot that will surely happen one day soon.

3. Willow Rosenberg (Buffy The Vampire Slayer)
Willow is a self taught witch whose powers are mighty, if somewhat inconsistent. She lost points thanks to that whole season 6 Dark Willow issue, otherwise she'd be a top contender.

2. Samantha Stephens (Bewitched)
The original suburban housewitch, and cause of many a bewitching thought amongst mortal men. Samantha may appear to be a young woman but we discover she is actually hundreds of years old. Samantha actually gained points for having to put up with hapless Darrin for 8 years in prime time, but then lost them all thanks to the dreadful Nicole Kidman interpretation.

1. Hermione Granger (Harry Potter)
There can be only one witch, and it is this mighty muggle. Yes, she might be a teacher's pet, but she never forsook her friends, choosing not to return to Hogwarts for her final year of studies and instead accompany Harry Potter on his quest to find and destroy Lord Voldemort's Horcruxes. She then fought in, and survived, the Battle of Hogwarts.

But you don't have to take it from me, it says right there in the 'Harry Potter' text that Hermione is the "brightest witch of her age." And you kind of suspect that if the JK Rowling had titled her series 'Hermione Granger and the...' instead of 'Harry Potter and the...', she'd have seen off Voldermort in four books rather than seven!

So that's it! We now know which witch is the best witch. Hopefully you'll sleep better this weekend.

Did your favourite witch make the top 10?
