With Spongebob Squarepants recently celebrating its twentieth anniversary, we go behind the voice and discover twenty famous people who have guest starred on the hit Nickelodeon series.
1. David Bowie
The Thin White Duke played the tall blue thing, also known as Lord Royal Highness in the season 5 Spongebob Squarepants episode Atalantis Squarepantis.
2. Pat Morita
When Spongebob and Sandy visit Karate Island who better to guide them in the ways of the ancient martial art than Mr. Miyage himself, Pat Morita.
3. Johnny Depp
That's Johnn Depp there, playing the wonderfully named Jack Kahuna Laguna in the season 6 episode Spongebob Squarepants vs The Big One.
4-6. Rik Mayall, Nigel Planer and Christopher Ryan
I'm really not sure how many Nickelodeon viewers would be aware of these three The Young Ones co-stars, but they reunited to voice Lord Reginald, Doctor Marmalade and Professor Percy in the season 4 episode Chimps Ahoy.
7. Amy Poehler
When Gary runs away in the season 4 episode Have You Seen This Snail, it's Grandma that finds him and gives him a home. With grandma's voice being none other than Parks and Recreation star Amy Poehler.
8. Patton Oswalt
Before Spongebob worked at The Krusty Krab there was Jim (above left), The Original Fry Cook, as voiced in the season 5 episode by Patton Oswalt.
9. Matt Berry
Matt Berry lent his unmistakable dulcet tones to Bubbles the dolphin for the second Spongebob Squarepants movie, Sponge Out Of Water.
10. John Hamm
It's Spongbob meets Mad Men for the season 9 episode Goodbye, Krabby Patty? with John Hamm voicing the character Don Grouper (see what they did there?).
11. Kristen Wiig
In season 7 Kristen Wiig voiced the suitably named Madame Hagfish in The Curse Of The Hex.
12. Mark Hamill
That's Luke Skywalker, that is. Or rather it's The Moth, voice by Mark Hamill in the season 5 episode Night Light.
13. Christopher Guest
The Spinal Tap star voiced Stanley S. Squarepants in the season 5 episode of the same name. Not to be outdone..
14. Michael McKean
Christopher Guest's Spinal Tap co-star Michael McKean made two guest voice appearances on season 9 on Spongbob Squarepants. Above he's the voice of Captain Frostymug in Licence To Milkshake. He could also be heard as Lonnie in Sharks vs Pods. In the same episode, you could also hear...
15. Henry Winkler
The one time Fonzie, who 40 years previously had, quite literally, 'jumped the shark' is now voicing one. He played Sharkface in Sharks vs Pods.
16. Gene Simmons
In season 5 one-half of the founding members of Kiss, Gene Simmons, voiced a Sea Monster in 20,000 Patties Under The Sea.
17 & 18. Scarlett Johansson & Jeffrey Tambor
In the first Spongebob Squarepants movie, Black Widow herself voiced Princess Mindy (above left). Her father, King Neptune, was voiced by the Arrested Development star Jeffrey Tambor.
19. Steve Buscimi
In the season 10 episode The Getaway, Steve Buscemi voiced the character Dorsal Dan.
20. David Hasselhoff
Lastly, but most definitely not leastly, it's The Hoff! Playing himself in a classic scene during The Spongebob Squarepants Movie, and again for the twentieth anniversary special Spongbob's Big Birthday Blowout.
