Today In DOCTOR WHO History: September 1st

It's a double dose of Daleks!

September 1st
Welcome to another round-up of all things Doctor Who that occurred on this day, September 1st, in the show's history. Starting with two actual episodes, the first seeing the Fourth Doctor face the Destiny of the Daleks. The opening episode of 1979's Season 17 was broadcast at 6:13pm, and it was watched by an enormous 13.00 million viewers!

Beat that Matt Smith.

Oh, you can't. Still, on this day in 2012 Asylum of the Daleks drew a very respectable 8.33 million viewers. Well done mate, well done.

Also on this day, in 2011 the eighth episode of Torchwood: Miracle Day, titled End of the Road, received its UK premiere broadcast (after debuting six days earlier on US cable channel Starz). 4.64 million viewers tuned in to discover that, alas, it was not the end of the road of Miracle Day as there would be two more episodes to come. After it finished at 10pm that Thursday evening, irate viewers took to their phones to report the series to trading standards for false advertising, perhaps.

Whilst we're on the subject of Torchwood...

Born September 1st 1974, Burn Gorman, known to Who fans as Torchwood's Owen Harper, celebrates his birthday today.

Happy birthday to you.

Join us again tomorrow for another round-up of the episodes broadcast, the spin-offs, the special events, the birthday's celebrated and anything else of note that went down on this day in Doctor Who history.
