Today In DOCTOR WHO History: January 26th

Elon Musk announces his latest plans for space travel, today in Doctor Who history...

Welcome to our daily round-up of the Doctor Who episodes which received their premiere broadcast on this day throughout the show's long history, along with anything else of note that may have taken place. You can click on any red text to read our full retrospectives/reviews for that episode, and note that all viewing figures listed are for UK broadcasts (unless otherwise stated).

January 26th
We begin another day in Doctor Who history with part three of Invasion of the Dinosaurs which was broadcast this day in 1974 and watched by a whopping 11 million viewers.

I know what you're thinking, that picture above is Elon Musk testing out his new solution to reach Mars, but you're wrong! Cast your mind back to Tuesday January 26th 1982 and you'll remember that it's actually part four of Four To Doomsday, which was broadcast at 7:06pm and watched by 9.4 million viewers.

What else do we have for this day? Well there's part four of Snakedance which aired the following year and was watched by 7.4 million. And in his final season, Peter Davison's Doctor began a new adventure with Frontios, broadcast Thursday January 26th at 6.41pm to an audience of 8 million. And then we have the second and final part of the Sixth Doctor adventure Vengeance On Varos which was broadcast in 1985 and watched by 7 million.

Sunday January 26th 2020 saw the Judoon make their long awaited return to Doctor Who, although that was the least of the surprises in store for the Thirteenth Doctor in the controversial Fugitive Of The Judoon. The space rhino police things weren't chasing Dr Richard Kimble, rather the Ruth-Doctor who'd been hiding out on earth in 21st century Gloucester. 5.57 million viewers were left scratching their heads, trying to work out where this unknown incarnation fitted in the Doctor's timeline, and what on earth Captain Jack was on about and his talk of lone cybermen. All would be revealed in due course...

Join us again tomorrow for another round-up of the episodes broadcast, the spin-offs aired, the special events, the birthday's celebrated and anything else of note that went down on this day in Doctor Who history.
