Today In STAR TREK History: August 6th

In which we make second contact.
Welcome to our round-up of the Star Trek episodes which received their premiere broadcast on this day throughout the show's long history, along with anything else of note that may have taken place. All viewing figures quoted are for U.S. premiere broadcast (unless noted).

August 6th
On this day in 2020 Star Trek: Lower Decks began with an episode titled Second Contact. The series premiere followed Ensign Tendi on her first day of work on Starfleet's USS Cerritos, where she meets three fellow support crew members, Ensigns Mariner, Boimler, and Rutherford. Meanwhile, Boimler is tasked with a secret special assignment and Rutherford attempts to keep his dating life intact while an outbreak strikes the ship.

The first animated Star Trek series since the 1970s Star Trek: The Animated Series, Lower Decoks follows the low-ranking support crew of the starship U.S.S. Cerritos in the year 2380. Tawny Newsome, Jack Quaid, Noël Wells, and Eugene Cordero voice "lower decks" crew members of the Cerritos, with Dawnn Lewis, Jerry O'Connell, Fred Tatasciore, and Gillian Vigman also providing voices for the series. Although the first season received mixed reviews, a second is on its way and the show has already been renewed for a third.

And now it's time to pop ya collar...
On this day in 1962, Michelle Yeoh Choo-kheng, PSM (which is a Malaysian federal award; The Most Esteemed Order of Loyalty to the Crown of Malaysia) was born. Of course, you know Michelle Yeoh from Star Trek: Discovery where she was the captain of the USS Shenzhou and Emperor from the Mirror Universe. She is also currently set to star in a Star Trek spinoff, about Section 311.
You may also have seen her in the James Bond film Tomorrow Never Dies, martial arts film Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, and more recently in Crazy Rich Asians.

Happy birthday to you!

Join us again next time for another round-up of the episodes broadcast, the movie's released, the special events, the birthday's celebrated and anything else of note that went down on this day in Star Trek history.
