You don’t have to undergo astronaut training to explore outer space. A number of video games have made it possible to virtually journey across the cosmos. From Stellaris to No Man’s Sky, here are some of the top space exploration games that you need to try.
Stellaris
Stellaris is a strategy game on a galactic scale. You command a custom-made civilization and interact with various other alien species - choosing either to conquer or make alliances. Dynamic storylines ensure that no two playthroughs are the same. It’s an incredibly dense game that melds sci-fi politics, space battles and disasters.
Outer Wilds
This game sees you playing an astronaut-archaologist exploring a hand-crafted solar system caught in a 22 minute time loop. It’s a puzzle solving game at its core in which you have to work within a time limit before you die and the universe resets. Every new part of the solar system that you explore helps to provide answers and raise new questions.
EVE online
This sci-fi MMORPG allows you to choose your own space adventure while interacting with players around the world. Make money through a range of virtual professions including mining, trading, manufacturing, combat and piracy. The economy and politics are driven by the players within the game, resulting in a truly unpredictable world where you have the option to shape the future.
Star Citizen
Still in Alpha and evolving, Star Citizen aims to be the most detailed and immersive space exploration game ever produced. You have the option to pilot spaceships with walkable interiors, navigate sprawling futuristic cities and adventure through hostile alien biomes. You can also buy spaceships with real world money and customize them with paint schemes. Reviews of the Alpha version have already been positive and there is a lot of excitement building up to the full release - having been in development for over a decade.
Kerbal Space Program
Kerbal Space Program is a game of space mechanics. You play as a cartoonish alien race known as the Kerbals and your mission is to build and successfully launch a rocket into space. The game mixes real world physics with extra-terrestrial tech and hilarious animations. It’s quite challenging, but ultimately rewarding and educational.
Elite Dangerous
Elite Dangerous is a space flight simulation game with a vast universe to explore (a 1:1 recreation of the Milky Way). Choose from an array of careers from trader to bounty hunter and explore the galaxy in incredible detail. Spaceships come with stunning cockpits with the option to play the game in first-person VR mode for ultimate immersion.
No Man’s Sky
This game has an almost near infinite map to explore made up of procedurally generated worlds. This provides a unique experience for every player as they explore the universe. You have the option to freely wander or settle and build a base. Adding to the fun is an array of vehicles to operate including land vehicles and spaceships. Co-op play is available, making it also possible to play with friends.
