How many times have you watched the trailer now? Double digits yet? One more time can't hurt...
Pretty awesome right? So let's break it down...
The first thing that stands out is what they didn't feature in the 88 seconds - none of the original cast are present, no Luke, no Han, etc. I would put good cash money on almost monthly trailers between now and next December, and I can just picture that maybe the next one will end with a hooded figure pulling his cloak back to reveal his face, and it being a certain Mr. Skywalker.
But aside from the abscence of the old boys (and girl - Leia), and the fact there there was not one shot set in space, there is plenty to digest, starting with...
"There has been an awakening. Have you felt it? The Dark Side… and the Light Side."Apparently that's Andy Serkis providing the voiceover. Who's he talking to? Is he from the Dark Side....or the Light Side?
Look it's John Boyega...
Is it just me or does he remind you of a young black Matt Damon?
Also, is he a Stormtrooper? Or has he just 'borrowed' an outfit as Luke did back in A New Hope?
Either way, where he is sure looks like Tattoine. as does this...
Seems that JJ Abrams understands the need to introduce new toy lines in Episode VII, and this R2-MarkII type robot-ball (roball?) is no doubt being mass-produced right now in a huge Taiwanese sweat shop. George Lucas would approve.
I just hope for his sake that little Kenny Baker wasn't inside that thing!
Stormtroopers! I love the new-ish look, just enough to make them original all over again. There's also a blink and you'll miss it shot of a blaster, which is the same as the ones carried in Episodes IV through VI.
Next up, is Natalie Portman....
...Nah, of course not. But I did double take for a second. That's Daisy Ridley, dressed the same as Leia was on Endor in Return of the Jedi. Is she Han and Leia's daughter? Or are we just being led to believe that? Initially it looked like she was on one of the old Speeder Bikes, but...
...she's actually riding an oversized USB memory stick! (Maybe it contains the plans of a really really really big Death Star! "Help me SanDisk, you're my only hope").
Oscar Isaac as a Rebel Pilot is pretty much a safe bet. That would be an X-Wing Fighter he's piloting there, alongside at least two others...
Hopefully that's not Naboo, and they're not flying past to pick up Jar Jar!
I'm hazarding a guess that this next guy, brandishing a Light-Broad Sword, is Adam Driver...
...It looks like he's ventured North of the Wall. But I doubt he's in search of the Night Watch.
Clearly he's a Sith, there's a nice voiceover with the words "the Dark Side", just in case we were unsure. But why is it that the Sith always get the really cool looking Lightsabers?
Then there's the money shot...
...which was accompanied by the familiar John Williams fanfare, and men of a certain age the world over all suddenly resembled Randy Marsh...
You'll see that the Falcon has a new rectangular receiver, having lost the circular one during Return of the Jedi, and it's also in battle with a pair of Tie-Fighters...
But who is at the helm of the Millennium Falcon? If rumours are to be believed it isn't Han. Maybe that will be revealed in the next trailer.
As teaser trailers go this one did the job perfectly. Ending with the title "The Force Awakens" pushing its way through the words "Star Wars".
December 2015 now seems even further away than ever!
