Today In DOCTOR WHO History: June 25th

The First Doctor encounters a 1980s new-wave pop crossover today in Doctor Who history. Perhaps.

Welcome to our daily round-up of the Doctor Who episodes which received their premiere broadcast on this day throughout the show's long history, along with anything else of note that may have taken place. You can click on any red text to read our full retrospectives/reviews for that episode, and note that all viewing figures listed are for UK broadcasts (unless otherwise stated).

June 25th
Our daily round-up of the Doctor Who episodes broadcast today in the show's history sees the First Doctor encounter The War Machine(s). It's unknown if early drafts of the story saw it spring to life, open up one eager eye, focusing it on the sky, where ninety-nine red balloons go by. It's also unknown if Nena was influenced by Doctor Who. Although it's quite possible that 17 years before their biggest hit single, when Gabriele Susanne Kerner (aka Nena) was just a young girl in a little toy shop, buying a bag of balloons with the money she got, she then rushed home to catch episode 1 of this 1966 adventure alongside the 5.4 million other viewers.

Except she's German, and they didn't have Doctor Who in Germany back then, so never mind.

Birthdays
It's Sheridan Smith's birthday today. Born on this day in 1981, the actress has played the Eighth Doctor companion in over 30 Big Finish audio dramas. Happy birthday to you.

Join us again tomorrow for another round-up of the episodes broadcast, the spin-offs, the special events, the birthday's celebrated and anything else of note that went down on this day in Doctor Who history.
