That Time Jason Statham Represented England At The Commonwealth Games

Is there anything Jason Statham can't do?

As we've already explored, before Jason Statham got his first cinematic break in 1998s Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, and then pretty much cornered the market for British tough-guy roles, he was the go-to dancer of choice for some classic pop & dance acts, appearing in music videos for the likes of The Shamen and Erasure.

Stripped to his pants, either oiled up or sprayed silver, the Stath was usually pretty much naked throughout whilst shaking his funky stuff. Perhaps he got used to showing off all that bare skin from his years as a member of Britain's National Swimming Squad?

Yes, at the age of 11, young Jason Statham discovered a love for diving. He practised daily, perfecting his technique and rising in the ranks. Then when he was 23, and still had hair, Statham was chosen to be part of the six-strong diving squad representing England at the 1990 Commonwealth Games in New Zealand.

Jason Statham took part in the 1 meter and 3 meter springboard disciplines as well as the 10 meter platform, as you can see in the video clip below...

Sadly he didn't come home with any medals (Australia winning both springboard golds, with Wales taking the top spot in platform) and on his last dive was lucky to escape without injury. Maybe the size of the event was too much for the young Statham? After all, in 1990 he was not yet used to having a global audience watching him.

Still, it was all good practise for when he stripped to his pants again for the music video stage of his career. Diving especially came in useful when he was cast in the 1997 promo for To The Sea by Swiss electronic duo Yello. Yes, we've unearthed yet another pre-fame Jason Statham music video appearance for you. Here he is in a nice light green swimsuit climbing up the side of and diving from a tall building. Please do not attempt this at home...

Classic Statham!

Looking back on his years diving and in the national squad, Statham said it was "a great experience" and one that "teaches you discipline, focus, and certainly keeps you out of trouble".

What a varied life this guy has led, eh?
