The A to Z of SUPERNATURAL - K is for the King of Hell

Elle 'carries on' with her A to Z of Supernatural, and we've reached the letter K.

Before we get to the actual K in my A to Z of Supernatural I thought I'd do something a bit different. If Supernatural was to have an official theme tune, then it would have to be this. 'Carry On My Wayward Son' by Kansas (a K), it's the song that plays at the end of every season and shows 'The Road So Far'. Only watch the clip below if you've seen ALL of season 9...

I love that song. It is absolutely perfect for the show.

But now it is time for the actual K, it's the current King of Hell, Crowley.

Supernatural hit upon a winner when they cast Mark Sheppard as the demon, Crowley. Over the last 5 years I think he might have just become my favourite recurring character - sorry Cas. So let's have a brief look at some of Crowley's greatest hits.

Crowley was born as Fergus Roderick McLeod in 1661 Scotland. He sold his soul for "an extra three inches below the waist", after dying he went to hell, was repeatedly tortured and rechristened Crowley. He then took the position of a crossroads demon, working up to the title King of the Crossroads. Eventually he became Lilith's second in command whilst she was Queen of Hell.

Crowley is the perfect demon, smooth, suave and sneaky. Using every trick in the book to further himself, and sacrifice anything (or anyone) for his own self-preservation. He loves to throw out the insults, calling Sam "Moose" and Dean "not Moose". But I think we've now got to the stage where the Winchester brothers truly believe that, when it comes to Crowley, it really is 'better the devil you know'.

We first meet Crowley in the season 5 episode Abandon All Hope... Lucifer has reclaimed the position as King of Hell and Crowley's still a crossroads demon, sealing deals with a kiss. In fact later that year he'd make one with Bobby.

It's season 6 when Crowley becomes the new King of Hell, and this season gave us some great interaction between him and Castiel. Crowley approached Cas with a proposal that they join forces to locate Purgatory, offering an advance loan of 50,000 souls from Hell in exchange for half the souls in Purgatory.

Moving on to season 8 and the closing episode, Sacrifice. Sam and Dean trap Crowley and use him to perform the third trial. Sam begins the ritual and Crowley slowly starts to feels the effects of Sam's purified blood, and begins showing signs of humanity, saying that he wants to be loved and showing some remorse for his actions, asking Sam where he could even begin to ask for forgiveness. He even performs a little David Bowie...

Crowley spends a lot of season 9 locked up in the dungeon at the Men of Letters base. Again, I'm not going to spoil the recent episodes for anyone who isn't up to date with this season, but I will say it's Crowley's best to date, which may explain why Mark Sheppard has been promoted to series regular for season 10. Good news for me, because I can't get enough Crowley.
